Bringing public health science to life: Haremi develops Virtual Lab

Haremi recently worked with researchers at the University of Kentucky who are developing wastewater-based epidemiology technologies. Together, we created an interactive virtual laboratory simulation that gives learners first-hand experience of real-world public health science.

The simulation recreates a laboratory workflow for detecting SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater, a surveillance approach used during the COVID-19 pandemic to monitor community-level trends in viral transmission. Learners step into the role of a researcher and work through an 11-step testing process, analysing wastewater samples and applying laboratory techniques.

Haremi's role involved the editorial development of the university's storyboards, creation of bespoke visual assets and a SCORM-compliant digital simulation built in Articulate 360. The resulting experience combines realistic, animated laboratory workflows and interactive decision-making.

The simulation builds on research and technologies being developed through the NSF ESCAPE Center. It translates laboratory procedures and emerging technologies into an interactive educational experience designed to help learners understand the connections between science, engineering and community health.
